2004 Calendar Events

President George W. Bush was re-elected as American President, fossilized remains of ancient tiny people were discovered and The Lord of the Rings cleaned up at the Academy Awards. 1st Quarter of 2004 Calendar

  • January 2004
    January 5 - International travelers to the United States are required to be fingerprinted and photographed as part of a new security system.
    January 27 - U.S. Senator John Kerry wins the New Hampshire Democratic primary.

    February 2004
    February 1 - The New England Patriots win the Super Bowl after the winning field goal is kicked with just four seconds left in the game.
    February 3 - The CIA admitted to there being no imminent threat from weapons of mass destruction before the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003.
    February 29 - The film The Lord of the Rings wins Academy Awards in every category in which it was nominated.

    March 2004
    March 2 - Kerry wins nine of ten states in the primaries, securing his nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate.
    March 5 - Martha Stewart is found guilty on obstruction of justice charges.
    March 11 - California Supreme Court orders San Francisco to halt the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
    March 23 - Former and current U.S. Officials testify before the 9/11 Commission, investigating the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

2nd quarter of 2004 Calendar

  • April 2004
    April 4 to 7 - U.S. troops are attacked in several ambushes in Iraq.
    April 15 - The EPA tells 31 U.S. governors that their states' air pollution violates federal health standards.
    April 30 - Graphic photos of Americans abusing Iraqis in an Iraqi prison are broadcast on U.S. network television.

    May 2004
    May 6 - The final episode of the long-running television series Friends airs, and 52 million people watch.
    May 29 - The United States' World War II Memorial is dedicated.

    June 2004
    June 3 - CIA Director George Tenet resigns for "personal reasons".
    June 5 - Former U.S. President Ronald Reagan dies at 93.
    June 28 - The U.S. hands over power to the Interim Iraqi Government.

3rd quarter of 2004 Calendar

  • July 2004
    July 4 - The groundbreaking for Freedom Tower takes place, at Ground Zero, where the World Trade Center's twin towers once stood.
    July 25 - Cyclist Lance Armstrong wins his 6th consecutive Tour de France.
    July 29 - Senator John Kerry accepts the Democratic presidential nomination at the Democratic National Convention.

    August 2004
    August 13 to 19 - The 2004 summer Olympics are held in Athens, Greece.
    August 30 - U.S. President Bush and Vice President Cheney are re-nominated at the Republican National Convention.

    September 2004
    September 1 - Approximately 1,200 people, including many children, are taken hostage by Chechen terrorists in a Russian school, and more than 350 die from explosives.
    September 30 - President Bush and Senator Kerry debate foreign wars in their first debate surrounding the presidential election.

4th quarter of 2004 Calendar

  • October 2004
    October 1 - Thousands of U.S. and Iraqi troops attack insurgents in Iraq.
    October 28 - Archaeologists find skeletons of ancient tiny people who were about three feet tall and had long arms and small heads. The Homo floresiensis species is believed to have become extinct only 13,000 years ago.

    November 2004
    November 2 - U.S. President George W. Bush beats Senator John Kerry in the presidential election.
    November 14 - U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell resigns and replaced by Condoleeza Rice.

    December 2004
    December 26 - The largest earthquake in 40 years hits the Indian Ocean causing one of the most cataclysmic natural disasters in recorded history. More than 186,980 people were killed when the resulting tsunami hit southeastern Asia.
