Administrative Professionals Day History

  • Administrative Professionals Day HistoryAdministrative Professional's Day started off as Secretary's Day. It's all a part of National Professional Secretaries Week, an annual event that started in 1952 in a little company called Young and Rubicam (now one of the country's largest advertising and PR firms). Harry Klemfuss recognized his secretaries for the importance and value they brought to the company and he aimed to encourage more women to become secretaries. Using his public relations savvy, he promoted the values and importance of the job that secretaries do. In doing so, and in coordination with the National Secretaries Association, he created the National Secretary's Day holiday in recognition of the importance of secretaries.

The National Secretaries Association is now the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAPP). According to its website, the names of the holidays were changed to Administrative Professionals Week and Administrative Professionals Day to keep pace with changing job titles and expanding responsibilities of today's administrative workforce. The two names usually mean different roles and responsibilities to different companies. Both are broader terms that encompass more positions than the original Secretary role.
